The principles that President Obama has outlined for national health care reform are driven by a goal that I share: universal access to affordable health care. Last week, I went to Washington to speak with members of Congress about an idea that can help make that goal a reality: a public health insurance option.
Today, most Americans get their health coverage from private insurers. A public health insurance option would create a competitor to private insurers that could potentially drive down costs across the board. I support the concept of a public plan, because if it's done right, it means introducing exactly the kind of competition our system needs.

A couple of quick acknowledges. First of all, I want to thank President Templin and Chancellor DuBois for their wonderful hospitality. We are grateful to both of them.

Historic City News has learned that yesterday, Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty sent to legislative critics a list of the more than 50 companies that have gotten a license to start selling property insurance in Florida since 2006.
This represents the latest volley in a back and forth over the future of how homes will be insured in hurricane-prone Florida.

The rules endorsed by the Federal Constitutional Court are not compatible with the business model of private health insurers. Political efforts to bolster the statutory health insurers by increasing the burden on private insurers are misguided. Instead of boosting sustainability they will diminish it.

Congressional committees heard a lot this month about the devious schemes used by health insurance companies to drop or shortchange sick patients. It was a damning portrait — and one Americans know from painful personal experience — of an industry that all too often puts profits ahead of patients.

It was once a major bone of contention between then-Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, as they campaigned for the Democratic presidential nomination. Clinton's health care proposal required Americans to have health insurance, similarly in theory to how drivers are required to have car insurance. Obama's didn't.

President Barack Obama addressed the nation’s health care system and his plans for reform in a news conference yesterday at the White House. With nearly 50 million people in the United States without insurance, the President told reporters “Reform is not a luxury, it is a necessity.” While Obama is not proposing a single-payer system to replace private health care companies, the insurance industry is nevertheless vehemently objecting to his plan to create a “public option” choice for Americans.

Americans pay a huge tax to the corporate state-protected health insurance industry in the obscene premiums included in the cost of everything made, purchased and consumed.
The health insurance companies’ premiums even include the cost of health care for their own people--top-notch care to the fat cats running the scam.
And care provided by hospitals and doctors (for those still lucky enough to receive it) include the large cost of providing their staff health insurance coverage. Is this insane?
